Assignment: Utilizing the Internet as a Research Resource

Part I

Prepare a guide that introduces others to information sources in your subject field.

In this assignment, you will be working within your assigned research groups to prepare a guide and post it as a comment within the College Insights Blog to be discussed next week in class.

This guide should provide others with a list of three authoritative and comprehensive sites in which information on your chosen topic can be accessed.
Beside each site address, list 1 to 3 major concepts or ideas you were able to utilize from that site's information, and be prepared to discuss why and how that site was chosen to be included in your research.

Part II

Topic: In a one paragraph statement, address the following question.

On Feb. 28, 1971, a bombing at the U.S. capitol created a radical change in Washington policy and in national attitudes. How does that past historical situation relate to contemporary events in our country?

1. Keep a "research log" documenting where you look for information, analyzing what techniques worked and what didn't, and discussing how the material found affected your thinking on the topic.

2. Write down all keywords and phrases you used in searching information on this topic.

Art History Resources on the Web
Created and maintained by Professor Christopher Witcombe of Sweet Briar College, Virginia, this is one of the first Web sites of its kind. Arguably the best and most comprehensive compilation of art and art history content on the Internet, the site provides a massive gateway to just about everything that you need to get started, from the general to the specific. The site includes a section on art outside of European traditions, as well as a very informative section on research resources in art history. One could spend months on this site alone and still would not have turned over all of its stones.

Adult/Teenage suicide is a subject that people don't want to talk about but it does occur in our socitey probably more than anyone would imagine. The CDC's (Center for Disease Control)website at http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/suifacts.htm contains relevant facts and statistics about this devastating subject. http://teensuicide.us/articles3.html
I think this is also another great website to find alot of detailed information on this serious matter, not only does this website cover the facts of teenage suicide but also the warning signs of suicide.
hppp://www.nimh.nih.gov/suicideprevention/index.cfm

http://smokefreeworld.com/
This site is a directory for smokefree entertaining purposes worldwide. Examples are dining, lodging, travel, etc. This site is available in six different languages. This site does not get into legal issues, it is soley for personal endeavors.
http://www.tobacco.org/
Offers up to date news and info along with links to other smokefree websites. It provides lists of current laws in process, updated headlines, news briefs, and individual feedback. It also provides assistance for people trying to quit smoking. This site gets more into legalities and personal ideas about smoking. It is a very interesting and informational site.
http://www.smokefree.net/
"Fighting for Smokefree Air"
This site's purpose is to fight for smokefree air, allow communication between nonsmoking advocates and "KDMs" (key decision makers), and to share information about tobacco "cartels". This site has documents on all lawsuits, passed laws in each state, and documented research on each ciggarette manufacturer. The difference between this website and others is that this one provides more consumer information.

Ladies Home Journal had before and after photos of many types of plastic surgery. It gave examples of procedures, what to expect during and after. It also gave insight on perspective toward having the procedure done or not.

http://www.siliconeholocaust.org/photos1a.html
this website shows the downside to having elective surgeries, mainly breast augmentation. It shows very graphic photos of procedures that went awry. It also gives indepth detail to what happened to each individual.

http://plasticsurgery.com/
